Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Page2Screen: HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN

Ian and Cole continue their annual Harry Potter birthday bonanza with a "Page2Screen" look at Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban! This third entry in the blockbuster book/movie phenomenon finds the thirteen-year-old wizarding wunderkind holed-up in Hogwarts as a murderous Voldemort confederate stalks the school, following a daring prison escape.

The validity of that description is questionable, and the novel paints a richly textured portrait of a boy whose trust in authority is tested at every turn. Alfonso Cuarón's 2004 film leaves out several key developments, which the guys break down and compare against the big-screen adaptation's overall effectiveness.

And, yes, they also talk about the whirlwind of controversy surrounding series author J.K. Rowling--and whether or not Prisoner of Azkaban in particular may shed light on the nuances of her stance toward the Transgender community. And whether that nuance is productive in advancing the cultural conversation.
