Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep617: The Slowdown: SUNSET Clause

Ep617: The Slowdown: SUNSET Clause

Ian, Sujewa, and Alia look at the second installment of Richard Linklater's Before Trilogy. Picking up nine years after Before Sunrise, 2004's Before Sunset finds Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy) reconnecting in Paris for a brief but possibly life-altering walk-and-talk.

Watch as the gang digs into why this middle chapter may be the most profound and personal, and thrill to the spectacle of Ian clumsily dismounting a moral high horse. Also, Sujewa gives an update on the forthcoming movie he wrote, directed, edited, and stars in alongside Alia, The Secret Society for Slow Romance!

Join us next month as we round out the Trilogy with a review of Before Midnight!
