Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep618: Friday the 40th: Shuffle Mode (Series Finale!)

Our year-long look at the Friday the 13th franchise comes full circle, as Ian, Lee, and Crystal Lake Memories author Peter M. Bracke review Marcus Nispel's 2009 remake!

After two "final" installments, a trip to space, and a showdown with Freddy Krueger, it turns out the only thing capable of stopping the Crystal Lake Killer are dueling factions of lawyers! It's been over a decade since the Michael Bay-produced blockbuster took theatres by storm--only to remain sequel-free as rights issues tied up any future installments.

Today, the guys look at the reboot's surprising pluses, not-so-surprising minuses, and spend a gratuitous amount of time talking about nudity (in the context of the film's controversial, copious flesh). Special thanks to Peter for joining us on the last few episodes, and for everyone who's watched or listened during 2020--which has become a horror movie all its own!

And don't worry: If Jason Voorhees rises from his watery grave someday, we'll be here talking about it!
