Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep776: Late Screening: THE THING (1982)

Ian and Cole thaw out "Late Screening" with a 40th-anniversary review of The Thing!

Yes, it's been awhile since the guys got together, and what better way to restart the series than with one of pop culture's most beloved sci-fi/horror films? Fans of John Carpenter's 1982 remake might want to hold the fist-pumping: like the doomed researchers at Station 4, you may want to take a flamethrower to our intrepid hosts--or at least their "alien" opinions!

This was a first-time viewing for Cole, and the first time in a long time for Ian--meaning there's barely a shadow of nostalgia hovering over this review. The result is a mixed bag that comments on how fan perception can change over time, and how the ever-evolving filmmaking landscape can affect the way newcomers engage with classic works.

And stick around to the very end for a thematically appropriate disruption by forces beyond the guys' control!
