Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep757: Characters, Classics, and THE DEVIL YOU KNOW: An Interview with Writer / Director CHARLES MURRAY

Ian welcomes writer/director Charles Murray to discuss his latest film, The Devil Know!

Omar Epps stars as Marcus, an ex-con who has made a better life for himself, thanks to the support of his large, loving family. When younger brother Drew (William Catlett) gets mixed up in a horrific crime, Marcus' instinct to protect his sibling proves disastrous--leading to fractured relationships and the prospect of returning to prison.

In this spoiler-free, free-flowing conversation, Charles talks about how his career writing and producing genre TV (Luke Cage, Clone Wars, and many others) informs his more personal independent work; how classic crime films informed the way he told The Devil Know, and how he approached directing a tense interrogation scene between Omar Epps and Michael Ealy (who plays the detective pursuing Marcus and Drew).

Plus: find out what it was like going to see The Batman with Jeph Loeb, co-creator of some of the Dark Knight's most cherished modern storylines!

The Devil Know is now playing exclusively at AMC Theatres.
