Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep747: MARRY ME (2022) - Movie Review

Ian and David walk Marry Me down the aisle...straight to the electric chair!

Jennifer Lopez plays a global pop sensation. Owen Wilson plays a Luddite New York school teacher. They get married as part of a botched publicity stunt and must navigate each other's very different worlds...for some reason.

Kat Coira's mixed-up movie wants to be a throwback to the golden era of early-2000s romcoms--as well as a commentary on the mutated media culture that emerged from that time, starring two actors who are at least twenty years past believability in these roles.

And it's a comic book movie, to boot!

Your crusading, crusty critics dig into the highs and lows of a film that spends more time checking boxes and rehashing Notting Hill than justifying its own existence.

Won't you be our Plus One?

Marry Me is now playing in theatres and streaming on Peacock.
