Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep746: There's No Stalgia Like Nostalgia: WAYNE'S WORLD (1992)

Romance is old hat. Bromance is where it's at! And on today's very special installment, Ian and Pat McDonald revisit one of the all-time great "I Love You, Man" movies, Wayne’s World--which opened exactly thirty years ago today!

Yes, we're switching it up a bit, focusing on a movie that was a big part of Ian's formative years (and, as it turns out, to the broader pop culture landscape all the way through the mid-2000s).

Though they're not worthy to do so, the guys heap praise on this feature-length SNL skit, marveling at its concept, interweaving of "bits" into a perfectly orchestrated narrative whole, and the punk-rock spirit that director Penelope Spheeris brought with her from the days of helming punk docs like The Decline of Western Civilization.

So gather some friends, gas up the car, and fire up "Bohemian Rhapsody" (after you listen to our show, of course): it's time to party on!
