Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep709: Late Screening: DONNIE DARKO

Ep709: Late Screening: DONNIE DARKO

Ian and Cole put on their stupid human suits for a 20th anniversary "Late Screening" retrospective of Donnie Darko!

After avoiding a deadly freak accident, troubled suburban teen Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) begins exhibiting mysterious abilities and foresight--guided by a creepy, six-foot-tall rabbit named Frank (James Duvall), who warns him that the world is coming to an end. Donnie's quest to help reset a broken timeline leads him to uncover town secrets and come to terms with his place in an emotionally awkward family.

In this theories-heavy discussion, the guys attempt the impossible: making sense of writer/director Richard Kelly's brilliant but utterly inscrutable time travel horror drama.

Also, stay 'til the end to find out what's in store for October's mind-breaking blockbuster edition of "Page2Screen"!
