Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar Noé, Rachel Brosnahan, Amy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

From the ashes of "The Slowdown" emerges a brand new series focusing on the wide, weird world of independent film!

Ian and Sujewa kick of "IndieSeen" with returning guest and Baylor University Professor of Film and Digital Media Chris Hansen. His latest film, Seven Short Films About (Our) Marriage, recently made its streaming debut, and is comprised of seven vignettes integral to the rocky fourteen-year marriage of Noah (Drez Ryan) and Madison (Chynna Walker).

Chris talks about the real-life inspirations for the story; breaks down the filming of a pivotal and highly emotional scene, and talks about Seven Short FIlms' unconventional release. Also, Ian and Sujewa put Chris in the hot seat with some critiques that really open up the discussion!
