Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep701: Hammerland: MONSTERPALOOZA 1970!!!

In their eighth and most jam-packed episode yet, Ian and Aaron look at three Hammer films from 1970: Horror of Frankenstein, Scars of Dracula, and Taste the Blood of Dracula!

Yes, it was a busy year for the house of horror, and each of these films offers a unique take on their respective legendary franchise. From Dracula taking a backseat to his children of the night; to a Frankenstein origin story that's more Austin Powers than Mary Shelley, there's a lot of weird steam still to be let off on these series--even after more than a decade of churning out sequels!

The guys take on each film, with only a cursory review of Scars--since they talked about that way before their official Hammerland project (link to that audio podcast below).

Join us next month for the thrills and chills of 1971!
