Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep629: THE PROM - Movie Review

Ian and Pat put on their virtual tuxes and dance the night away at Netflix's The Prom!

Ryan Murphy's adaptation of the hit Broadway musical debuted late last year, and the guys catch up with this fanciful, dance-able dramedy. Cultures clash when a quartet of New York theatre elites comes to the aid of an Indiana teen who's been barred from bringing her girlfriend to the big dance.

The guys talk about strong music; weak narrative underpinnings; and how two key bits of casting may have muddied an otherwise strong message. And, no, that doesn't refer to The Prom's most obviously controversial bit of casting--but that's up for discussion, too!
