Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep628: The Slowdown: BEFORE and After

Ian and Sujewa conclude their look at Richard Linklater's "Before Trilogy" with a sobering review of Before Midnight.

The 2013 drama finds lovers of happenstance Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy) married with children and trying to salvage their rocky relationship in a Grecian paradise. The guys bring the series full circle, examining the evolution of Linklater's collaborations with Delpy and Hawke; why there aren't more stories like this in mainstream entertainment; and what the future might hold for these enduring, endearing characters.

Also, Sujewa updates viewers on his latest film, The Secret Society for Slow Romance, co-starring Alia Lorae (who, unfortunately, was unable to join this conversation).
