Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar Noé, Rachel Brosnahan, Amy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and HollywoodChicago.com’s Pat “The Uber Critic” McDonald amp up the paranoia with a “Reelpolitik” look at The Parallax View! Alan J. Pakula’s precursor to All the President’s Men finds Warren Beatty dodging death and searching for the truth behind a senator’s assassination. The down-on-his-luck newspaper reporter soon discovers that the only person he can trust is himself, and that not even he is a reliable source!

Ian and Pat unravel the film’s eerily prescient ideas about the political/industrial complex; chuckle at Beatty’s amazing luck; and find parallels to Parallax in the modern political climate!

Also, Ian layers on the spandex and heads down to The Spoiler Room for a round table review of Mystery Men, and shares a video for Pat’s music duo, The Dark Room Men!
