Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep486: Reelpolitik: Follow the Money

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and Don Shanahan of Every Movie Has a Lesson meet in an underground parking garage to discuss All the President's Men! Yes, the second installment of our "Reelpolitik" miniseries centers on Alan J. Pakula's 1976 profile of Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman), whose dogged reporting on the Watergate scandal helped bring down a presidency.

In addition to exploring how this excellent political thriller turned phone calls, interviews, and chain-smoking into white-knuckle cinema, the guys compare Woodward and Bernstein's era to the new-millennium infotainment landscape (and, yes, the parallel impeachments are brought up).

Episode 486 is not a crook!

P.S. Here's a link to the Media Bias chart Don references in this episode.
