Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Today, The Kicking the Seat Podcast welcomes actor Jeremy Allen White, star of the sensational new thriller, The Rental. White, who rose to fame on Showtime’s ensemble drama, Shameless, plays one of four young lovebirds whose secluded weekend retreat turns into a nightmare of relationship drama and sinister forces watching their every move.

White talks with Ian about finding the character with first-time feature director Dave Franco and co-writer Joe Swanberg, and staying creative in an era of shuttered studios and limited personal contact.

The Rental is now available on demand, and is opening at over 250 drive-ins across America. Chicagoans can catch the film at the Music Box Theatre during a limited engagement, starting today (and be sure to check out Richard Roeper’s RogerEbert.com essay about how the historic venue is welcoming back patrons, even as most theatres remain dark).

Also, Ian reviews The Rental; recommends Criterion’s excellent new Marriage Story Blu-ray; and plugs the latest episode of You’ll Probably Agree—in which he presents a robust defense of 2019’s Cats!

Episode 564 isn’t camera-shy!
