Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep1180: IndieSeen: Past Forward: An Interview with "Young Ali" Filmmaker Amir Motlagh

Ian welcomes back filmmaker Amir Motlagh to discuss his 2024 drama, Young Ali: Those Were the Days!

Motlagh co-writes (with Charles Borg), directs, and stars in this slice-of-life look at a middle-aged Iranian-American man grappling with job loss and divorce in the early months of the COVID-19 lockdown. Forced to move back in with his elderly parents, he seeks refuge in old home movies while trying to figure out whether or not he has a future.

In this interview, Ian and Amir dig into the real-life roots of this challenging, heartfelt, and inspiring story, which expands upon similar themes from Motlagh's previous films. From the ins and outs of his scriptwriting collaboration, to capturing the naturalism of family arguments, to finding meaning at the depths of despair--this conversation delves into a movie that speaks not only to a specific moment in time, but to the universality of its rippling after effects.
