Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep1179: There's No Stalgia Like Nostalgia: Four Days in November (1964) - Movie Review

Kicking the Seat is nostalgic for tradition, so we're excited to welcome back Pat McDonald for our annual remembrance of the JFK assassination. In the wild return of "There's No Stalgia Like Nostalgia", the guys look at Mel Stuart's 1964 documentary, Four Days in November!

Detailing the events leading up to and immediately following that fateful day in Dallas, the film may be old hat to Camelot-philes. But for those who've spent decades learning about Kennedy, Oswald, and the web of theories that has spun out of 11/22/64 strictly from pop culture, Stuart's movie will be a true eye-opener.

Watch as Ian and Pat pull lessons from the characters, connections, and conspiracies--and how the continuously evolving media landscape shapes not only how we experience world events, but how we reflect on the way old media propagandized whole generations!
