Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep1117: The Life of Chuck (2025) - Live Roundtable Review

2025 is shaping up to be the Year of Stephen King, with three films and one TV series adaptations of his work on offer for rabid fans. This week, Earth's Mightiest Critics look at Mike Flanagan's The Life of Chuck, a very different kind of King movie--inspired by a very different kind of King short story!

Chuck Krantz (Tom Hiddleston) is an accountant whose imminent retirement is advertised on billboards all over town. Most residents are too busy worrying about rampant Internet outages, colossal natural disasters, and mysterious sinkholes to notice. But soon, Chuck's likeness becomes impossible to escape. How does this relate to dancing? And why are people calling this bizarre, end-of-the-world scenario an uplifting film?

The answers are as tricky as The Life of Chuck's asynchronous structure. Join us for a spoilerific look at one of 2025's best films--and one of the most faithful book-to-screen adaptations you'll ever see!

We also take your questions, comments and SuperChats!
