Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep510: Dungeons & Dad Jokes

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast embarks on a mythic quest to reveal the secrets of Pixar's latest gem, Onward! Accompanying Ian are David Fowlie of Keeping it Reel and Don Shanahan of Every Movie Has a Lesson!

In this spoilerific love fest, the guys talk about why Dan Scanlon's trolls-on-a-road-trip animation means so much to them, and how it outshines the Pixar formula.

Also, Ian drops a reminder about tomorrow's F This Movie Fest (featuring 1990's geekiest films); plugs his YouTube commentary about an odd and disappointing Onward controversy, and turns you on to the brand-new musician-interview show, This is Your Song Podcast!

Episode 510 is painting a unicorn on its rickety old van right this very moment!
