Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep484: Late Screening: Multiplication Tables

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and Cole Rush of The Quill to Live indulge in some midnight munchies with the last "Late Screening" of 2019! Joe Dante's Gremlins was a cultural phenomenon in 1984, and it made a huge impact on Ian. Cole watched it for the very first time recently, and his reaction was...let's say "less than adoring". In this action-packed exploration of the Battle of Kingston Falls, Ian learns that nothing gold can stay, and Cole accepts that Gremlins isn't quite as dumb as he initially thought!

Also, Ian reports back from the annual Chicago Film Critics Association dinner, with news on the top-winning film, and an odd bit of controversy surrounding the announcements.

Episode 484 wants a Peltzer Peeler/Juicer for Christmas!
