Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep357: One Small Step

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and David Fowlie of  Keeping it Reel engage in a star war over First Man.* Damien Chazelle's semi-conventional biopic finds Ryan Gosling suiting up as astronaut Neil Armstrong, whose 1969 lunar mission marked "one giant leap for mankind".

The guys debate the merits of a film whose technical achievements are impressive, but whose story and key performances beg more questions than answers. Is First Man destined for cinematic greatness, or will it burn up on re-entry? Listen in for some Earth-shattering opinions!

Also, Ian and David talk about several films premiering at the 54th Chicago International Film Festival (happening right now at the AMC River East), including an in-depth look at the struggling-artist drama, Olympia.

Episode 357 won't Apollo-gize for its edginess!

*Okay, it's a minor skirmish at best.
