Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep356: Harley and Clyde

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast and HollywoodChicago.com's Pat “The Über Critic” talk about Marvin Chomsky's larger-than-life biopic, Evel Knievel! George Hamilton stars in this wild and wacky 1971 film that traces the titular daredevil's journey from small-town spectator to Grand Canyon-leaping motorcycle superstar.

Pat and Ian separate myth from history, in this wide-ranging discussion of Knievel's significance in pop culture; the jaw-dropping cuts in his actual life story that were sacrificed in favor of breath-taking archival footage; and why this film could benefit from a TV-series reincarnation.

Note: The picture above is of the actual Evel Knievel, since there were no good stills of George Hamilton available online.

Also, Ian talks about refocusing his energies, and teases some of the spectacular episodes coming your way!

Episode 356 succumbs to the forces of Evel!
