Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep134: Big Picture, Small Picture

This week, Ian talks with Ryan Mullins of Big Picture Digital Prodcutions about his work on Shout Factory's premiere 4k Ultra HD title, Journey to Space! Narrated by Patrick Stewart and featuring a drop-dead gorgeous tour of space exploration's past, present, and future, the IMAX sensation hits home video today.

Ryan, a pioneer in the home video market, discusses how he got involved with the project, the future of the moviegoing experience, and how online piracy affects even big big-screen titans like IMAX. He also offers an odd but effective tip for demo-ing the latest high-tech home entertainment media--even if you're not an early adopter!
