Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

RE-ANIMATOR, Revisited

RE-ANIMATOR, Revisited

In honor of the late, great Stuart Gordon, Ian and Mark Krawczyk of Special Mark Productions look back on his debut film, Re-Animator (1985). This foundational horror/comedy classic finds a trio of med students caught up in experiments that seek to resurrect the dead--as well as a bizarre love triangle involving one of cinema's perviest faculty members!

The guys  geek out about the gore; examine the film's controversial "head" scene through a 2020 lens; and express their undying love for the Chicago-born director who gave us one of the weirdest and most successful Lovecraft adaptations ever.

And because it came up during the discussion, here's the trailer for (I kid you not) Corona Zombies!
