Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

The Slowdown: Cold Turkey

The Slowdown: Cold Turkey

This month, Ian and Sujewa welcome Liam Billingham of the Oeuvre Busters podcast for a lively and somewhat contentious look at Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Once Upon a Time in Anatolia. The stark Turkish drama centers on two murder suspects leading a team of investigators to their victim's burial site. A long night of dead ends and rising tensions leads to revelations both ghoulish and deeply personal.

Speaking of rising tensions, the guys dig into the highs and lows of Ceylan's vision, including how best to interpret a frustrating third act. If you've ever wondered how Gerard Butler and Transformers: The Last Knight might figure into a discussion of Slow Cinema, this is the episode for you!

For additional aural pleasure, keep up with Sujewa via his blog NYC Fantastic, which includes a new video series of filmmaker interviews, and check out the Batman & Robin episode of Oeuvre Busters!
