Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE Round Table Review

Earth's Mightiest Critics assemble once again to wade through Venom: Let There Be Carnage!

In director Andy Serkis' sequel to the surprise 2018 smash hit, sad-sack indie journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) must reckon with a savage alien that has melded with his body. Woody Harrelson pops up as death row inmate Cletus Cassidy, who gets a taste of Brock's powers and begins a citywide rampage of revenge and twisted love.

Watch as the gang dissects the good, the bad, and the gooey--including bizarre performances from Oscar-caliber actors; a troubling sense that the filmmakers don't actually respect the character at the heart of their movie; and a tonal inconsistency that could spell big trouble when this pocket Sonyverse collides with the greater Disney/Marvel brand!

In a surprise twist, one of Earth's Mightiest Critics didn't even see the movie, yet still had some of the episode's most spot-on takes!
