Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep896: TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS (2023) - Round Table Review

Transform and roll out with Earth's Mightiest Critics as we give shape to Transformers: Rise of the Beasts!

Steven Caple, Jr.'s entry into the smash-'em/crash-em robots franchise takes the story back to mid-90s Brooklyn, where down-on-his-luck computer whiz Noah (Anthony Ramos) finds himself caught up in a battle of worlds. He must help the heroic Autobots retrieve an ancient device and keep it out of enemy hands, so as to prevent the end of humanity.

No, we didn't copy/paste this synopsis from the plot of Michael Bay's 2007 Transformers movie! This one has robots that change into animals! In this ratcheted-up round table review, the EMC get into the good, the bad, and the downright depressing--talking characters, story points, and some disturbing messages woven into the script!

Note: Due to a technical issue, Ian sounds like he's "talking into the room" for the first few minutes of the show. Things get much better after a rough start.
