Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep859: Indies from Outer Space! THE VAST OF NIGHT and ABIQUIU with Emily Lape

Ian and David welcome back filmmaker Emily Lape to talk about her upcoming sci-fi drama, Abiquiu, and one of the movies that inspired it, Andrew Patterson's The Vast of Night!

This episode is part movie review, and part promotion of the Abiquiu crowdfunding campaign, which is currently underway at Seed&Spark. But it's also a look at one writer/director's grind in getting a microbudget indie off the ground--from scripting and meeting with potential investors, to casting and location scouting from across the country--all while balancing a day job that has nothing to do with the industry!

If you're interested in helping Emily make Abiquiu a reality, please consider supporting her Seed&Spark campaign via the link below, and check out her debut feature, the Chicago-set Mercy’s Girl, on Amazon Prime!
