Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep848: Spotlight India: OZHIVUDIVASATHE KALI (AN OFF-DAY GAME) (2015)

Our spotlight on Indian cinema roars into 2023 with a look at Sanal Kumar Sasidharan's Ozhivudivasathe Kali (An Off-Day Game)!

Inner demons begins to unravel when 5 friends get together for a booze party in a remote location.

Ian, Mike, Mark, and Jeff dig into this slow burning drama that raises a mirror to issues of masculinity, class, and politics in a way that few films do. It's got the attitude of The Hangover, the creepy, deep-woods danger of I Spit on Your Grave, and the unsettling man-child monster nihilism of Lord of the Flies. Despite all that, this is a really fun conversation!

Plus! We talk about what's ahead in 2023 (Pathaan, anyone?), and unleash some angeRRR over the Academy's near-shutout of S.S. Rajamouli's masterpiece!
