Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep840: BROKER (2022) - Movie Review

Ep840: BROKER (2022) - Movie Review

Ian and David ring in 2023 with a review of one of 2022's best films!

Broker is Hirokazu Koreeda's gripping dramedy, which begins with a young mother's decision to leave her newborn outside of an infant drop-box--and expands to encompass black market adoptions, gangsters, murder, and the oddest case of "found family" you're likely to see!

In this spoiler-ish discussion (don't worry, the heavy portions are called out beforehand), David gives Ian a crash course in Koreeda's filmography; the guys discuss whether or not Broker is a "message" movie; and Ian draws some bizarre parallels to Tony Scott's True Romance and the newly released killer-doll flick, M3GAN!

Broker is now playing at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago! Check the link below for tickets and showtimes.
