Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Earth's Mightiest Critics celebrate 800 episodes of the Kicking the Seat Podcast with a truly epic livestream for one of the year's biggest films!

S.S. Rajamouli's sprawling Tollywood adventure, RRR, tells the fictitious story of two legendary revolutionaries and their journey away from home before fighting for their country in the 1920s.

Hailed by many as one of 2022's very best, this 3-hour spectacle is available on Netflix--so no excuses for not having seen it!

In this live and lively extended show, the panel heaps praise on a film that cost a quarter of most American comic book movies--yet delivers on absolutely every level to four times the effect! Also, a contingent of new and very helpful chat participants join the fun, adding cultural context, unpacking visual metaphors, and planting the seeds for an upcoming Kicking the Seat series on the wonders of Indian cinema!
