Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep786: Accademia Giallo: THE HOUSE WITH LAUGHING WINDOWS (1976)

After a brief summer vacation, the Accademia Giallo crew returns with a no-laughing-matter look at The House with Laughing Windows!

In Pupi Avati's 1976 thriller, Stefano, a young restorer, is commissioned to save a controversial mural located in the church of a small, isolated village. Of course, this synopsis from IMDb leaves out all the tawdry details of the village’s history with torture, sex, and murder--but we'll give them an "A" for effort!

In today’s lesson, your fearsome faculty looks at the many ways in which Laughing Windows breaks the gialli mold, while also expanding the genre’s potential in its later stages. Ian calls it “the Last Jedi of giallo”—but don’t let that scare you away from this unique and ultra-disturbing slice of pastoral horror.

"Accademia Giallo" is Kicking the Seat's monthly deep dive into Italian Horror's "giallo" sub-genre. Join us LIVE in the chat for laughs, lessons, and lots of bad accents!
