Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep785: SPIDER-MAN 3 (2007) Round Table Review

Earth's Mightiest Critics cement our cinematic symbiosis with a retrospective review of Spider-Man 3!

Sam Raimi's 2007 blockbuster is notorious for being one of the worst superhero movies ever made--but does it deserve all that...venom?

Aided by clearer heads and the passage of time, Ian and Don & Will of the Cinephile Hissy Fit Podcast look back on a movie with too many villains, too many subplots, and too much emo jazz improv. It may also be, according to Ian after a recent re-watch, an imperfectly perfect capper to the Raimi trilogy!

This in-depth discussion runs the full spectrum of criticism--from mega-fan to mega-hater to middle-of-the-web moderate. We break down the history of the third (and rumored-at-the-time fourth) installment; address the "Gwen Stacy Problem"; and explore the alternate universes in which this movie fires on several more cylinders!
