Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep743: MOONFALL (2022) - Movie Review

Ian and David talk about Roland Emmerich's disastrous new disaster movie, Moonfall!

The director of Independence Day and 2012 returns with a new bucket of sci-fi popcorn starring Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, and John Bradley star as the only people on Earth who can stop the moon from crashing into it.

Oh, and they also uncover the mysteries of ancient aliens...

In this spoilerific review, the guys talk about Emmerich's recent Scorsese-esque comments regarding comic book movies and Star Wars films; how Moonfall's silliness fails where some previous disaster movies succeeded, and look at the subtle ways in which the filmmaker appears to strain against his own reputation--perhaps aiming for (dare we say it?!) brainier entertainment!
