Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep736: Page2Screen: THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING

Kicking the Seat closes out 2021 with a truly epic "Page2Screen"!

Ian and Cole look at J.R.R. Tolkein's seminal fantasy series, The Lord of the Rings, beginning with the first novel, The Fellowship of the Ring--and Peter Jackson's adaptation of it, which just turned 20!

In this fun (and by no means comprehensive) look, the guys talk about their history with the books and films, their thoughts on Tolkein's legacy in fantasy writing, and the deftness with which Jackson and company translated the author's vision to the silver screen--while not being slavish to it.

This marks the first of a 3-part annual series, which will see reviews of The Two Towers next year, and The Return of the King in December 2023!
