Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep725: Hammerland: FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL

Ep725: Hammerland: FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL

Ian and Aaron approach the outer limits of Hammerland with their review of Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell!

Director Terence Fisher and star Peter Cushing bid farewell to Baron Victor Frankenstein in one of the series' most conflicted entries. Shane Bryant plays Simon Helder, a brash young scientist who follows in the footsteps of the demented, long-dead doctor. When he's arrested on charges of "sorcery" and sentenced to a mental institution, he comes face to face with his idol--who has changed his identity and turned the inmates into an unwitting pool of organ donors! Gruesome hijinks ensue as Helder and "Dr. Carl Victor" create a brute super-human in secret, aided by the mute daughter of the institution's administrator.

Yes, it's all a bit soapy and convoluted, and Ian and Aaron place Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell in the greater context of the Hammer "Frankenstein" movies--without dropping a single Friday the 13th reference!

Join us next month, as Hammerland comes to its thrilling conclusion--and gives way to even more gruesome goodness in 2022!
