Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep692: Gonzo Legacy: Bobby Kennedy III on FEAR AND LOATHING IN ASPEN

Ian talks with writer/director Bobby Kennedy III about his narrative feature debut, Fear and Loathing in Aspen!

The film centers on Hunter S. Thompson's 1970 campaign for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado, and stars Jay Bulger as an uncannily striking doppelganger of the renowned gonzo journalist.

Kennedy opens up about the Thompson he knew as a boy, and the impact his writings about the famous family had on him as a young adult. He also shares some of his own adventures in gonzo filmmaking, and talks about what Thompson's legacy means today.

Fear and Loathing in Aspen is now playing in select theatres, courtesy of Shout! Studios.
