Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep686: KING KONG (1976) - Movie Review

Ian and David go positively ape$#!+ for John Guillermin's 1976 King Kong remake!

This underappreciated blockbuster finds a corporate oil expedition running afoul of Skull Island's oversized occupants (and the native culture that worships and fears them). Jeff Bridges, Jessica Lange, and Charles Grodin star as the unlikely trio whose exploits take the audience on an unpredictable adventure from the depths of uncharted jungles to the heights of the World Trade Center, in an Event Movie with more on its mind than spectacle.

The guys talk about why King Kong is such a popular story in remake circles; why Lange's stranded starlet character is so misunderstood; and why high definition is sometimes detrimental to older special effects showcases.

Also, David talks about some of the special features on Scream Factory's recent Blu-ray release!
