Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep669: EXPLORERS (1985) - Movie and Blu-ray Review

Ian and David build a nostalgia machine and revisit Joe Dante's 1985 cult kids film, Explorers!

Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, and Jason Presson star as three suburban pre-teens whose dreams are taken over by an alien intelligence. They use the knowledge shared by these mysterious E.T.s to cobble together a spaceship and head off to discover the secrets of the universe. What they discover lies at the heart of why Explorers is unique among the movies of its era--and why it failed to find much of an audience during its theatrical run.

Ian and David discuss what the film means to them, and how it fits into an unofficial mid-80s trilogy. They also share some thoughts on Shout Factory's new Special Edition Blu-ray, which came out this week.
