Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep648: Hammerland: THE EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN

Ian and Aaron continue their tour of Hammerland with 1964's The Evil of Frankenstein!

Hammer Films' first collaboration with Universal Pictures opened up many creative possibilities, but Freddie Francis' out-of-continuity sequel is as lumbering and unfocused as the creature in its title (and, yes, the guys explain why, in this case, they're comfortable referring to "Frankenstein" as the monster instead of the scientist who created him).

Despite the film's bizarre tone, retconned origins, and atrocious monster makeup, Ian and Aaron find a lot to love--especially Peter Cushing, who makes the most out of his utterly confused Victor Frankenstein!

Part history lesson, part therapy session, this episode is not to be missed!
