Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep644: BOSS LEVEL Movie Review

Ian and David use all the cheat codes on Joe Carnahan's Boss Level!

The Hulu Original film stars Frank Grillo as Roy, an ex-Special Forces operative who winds up inside a reality-altering machine. He lives the day of his death over and over (and over) again, fighting assassins, protecting loved ones, and trying to find a way out of this loopy lunacy.

The guys talk about the filmmakers' effective use of video game language in telling a non-video game story; why the cast (including Naomi Watts and Mel Gibson) make this an absolute must-see, and how Boss Level fits comfortably within the "Repeating Day" genre while also creating exciting new paradigms for future filmmakers to explore.

Boss Level is now streaming on Hulu Plus.
