Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep635: Slash Fiction w/ I BLAME SOCIETY Director Gillian Wallace Horvat

Ian talks with writer/director Gillian Wallace Horvat about her feature film debut, I Blame Society!

The horror/comedy/mockumentary follows a fictitious version of Horvat as she decides to chronicle her road to becoming a serial killer. Packed with the best kind of uncomfortable humor, disturbing gore gags, and bold social commentary, this mock-doc is a sharp calling card for a truly original voice.

In this spoiler-light discussion, Horvat talks about what drove her to make the film; becoming a version of herself on camera, and the insidiousness of Hollywood virtue signaling in regards to gender politics.

I Blame Society premieres On Demand this Friday, February 12th.
