Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast talks with filmmakers David Darg and Price James about their wild new documentary, You Cannot Kill David Arquette (which is now available On Demand). In 2000, the Scream star and all-around Hollywood goofball won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship belt—a scandal that shook the wrestling world to its core.

Decades later, with his film career in the can and a mid-life crisis at his doorstep, David Arquette decided to break back into the wrestling world and fight his way to the top. In this bloody, bizarre, yet oddly tender and cringe-funny film, Darg and James present audiences with a man willing to risk life, limb, and public humiliation to defeat his demons and prove his own self-worth.

This spoiler-lite discussion uncovers You Cannot Kill’s surprisingly personal origins; digs into the age-old real/fake wrestling debate; and pays tribute to Arquette’s late, great friend, Luke Perry.

Also, Ian reviews the film and draws a surprising connection to Bill & Ted Face the Music!

Episode 576 breaks kayfabe like nobody’s business, brother!
