Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar Noé, Rachel Brosnahan, Amy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Today, The Kicking the Seat Podcast closes out the week with an interview-packed extravaganza! Ian talks with the creators behind a whopping three films opening in theatres and On Demand this weekend (see links in each title below):

  • She Dies Tomorrow: Actresses Kate Lyn Sheil and Jane Adams talk about their roles in Amy Seimetz’s social-contagion thriller, in which a young woman’s doomsday beliefs begin to have adverse effects on those around her. Sheil and Adams share how they prepared for their roles and discuss the bizarre reality in which Seimetz’s film is being released.

  • I Used to Go Here: Ian teases his YouTube-exclusive interview with writer/director Kris Rey, who discusses her quirky college comedy starring Gillian Jacobs as a writer who returns to her alma mater in the midst of several life crises. The Chicago native talks about filming in the city; creating and casting unique characters; and her hopes for post-pandemic creativity in the indie film world.

    • You’ll also hear about an exclusive theatrical engagement at the Music Box Theatre, featuring an in-person Q&A with Kris Rey later this month!

  • You Never Had It: An Evening with Bukowski: In 1981, Italian journalist Silvia Bizio visited the San Pedro, California home of poet Charles Bukowski. What was supposed to be a regular interview became a nine-hour marathon of wine and revelations. Director Matteo Borgardt’s film cuts together highlights from that evening. Bizio spoke to Ian about meeting the cantankerous author of Ham On Rye and Love is a Dog From Hell; why European audience latched onto his work earlier than American readers; and how Bukowski’s writings and attitudes hold up today.

Plus Ian reviews all three films and recommends his latest appearance on the 90 Under 90 Podcast, in which he and the Eden brothers resurrect Bill Cosby’s 1990 family comedy, Ghost Dad!
