Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Today, the Kicking the Seat Podcast welcomes back filmmaker Amir Motlagh to discuss his latest film, Three Eleven! In this era of pandemics and social unrest, Motlagh and co-writer Charles Borg turn inward, focusing on a family sheltering-in-place as the world around them becomes unrecognizable.

The guys discuss the origins of this meditative, short-form slice of slow cinema, as well as the logistics of producing a film during lockdown, and the unexpected hurdle that made completing it a challenge.

Three Eleven is available now to rent or buy on Vimeo.

Also, Ian invites you to listen to the latest episode of The Spoiler Room Podcast, in which he discusses Telling Lies in America with Mark “The Movie Man” Krawczyk!

Episode 557 is just counting the days!
