Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar Noé, Rachel Brosnahan, Amy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep1267: Wildwood (2026) - Live Movie Review

Wildwood, the latest stop-motion animated feature from Travis Knight and Laika Studios, is a critical and audience darling.

So why aren't people showing up for it?

In this week's livestream, Ian and Jeff look at an offbeat modern-day fairy tale, in which a headstrong, lonely young girl in Oregon discovers a magical world full of bizarre creatures ruled by a cruel, sinister mother figure.

If you think we've copy/pasted the synopsis for Laika's Coraline into our Wildwood description by mistake...well, you've scratched the surface of this movie's myriad problems.

Join the guys as they saw through the hype to deliver a spoilerific review that'll be anything but wooden! We also take YOUR questions and comments in the chat!
