Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep1236: Toy Story 5 (2026) - Live Roundtable Review

Earth's Mightiest Critics had thought they were done with the Toy Story franchise after 2019's abysmal fourth entry. But Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris's have installed a fresh set of batteries known as Toy Story 5! Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the gang find themselves plunged into a world of tech, in which children have no need for rough-and-tumble toys.

When 8-year-old Bonnie is gifted a "Lilypad" smart device, the eclectic assembly of action figures, dolls, and toddler trinkets must fight for their owner's affections--while also helping her to make real life friends instead of just digital ones.

Join us as we get down on the floor and smash together a spoilerific assessment of this wild new entry, which updates the 1995 original for today (for better and, in some cases, for worse) ! We also take your questions, comments, and SuperChats!
