Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep1225: IndieSeen: Bread Machine (2026) - Movie Review

IndieSeen bakes up more arthouse deliciousness with a look at Rick Schmidt's latest film, Bread Machine!

Ahead of its debut at this weekend's 3I/ATLAS Film Festival in Brooklyn, Ian and Sujewa dig into this quirky comedy about a struggling family who decides to launch an independent bakery out of a relative's living room.

In a 2024 IndieSeen interview, Schmidt actually talked about the premise of the movie, which was still in its infancy--but does Bread Machine rise to its early promise? Find out in this spoilerific review--and, if you're in New York this weekend, be sure to check out the premiere at Rollin Studios.

The guys also talk about what movie-lovers can expect from 3I/ATLAS, which will feature wild films, great guests, and greater conversations!
