Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep1223: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026) - Live Roundtable Review

Until last weekend, Project Hail Mary was the number one movie in the world. Alas, it has been dethroned by a blockbuster of truly cosmic proportions: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie!

Though the film has made a Bowser-load of cash, not everyone is bowled over by its charms. It's a classic rivalry between reviewers and regular Joes and Janes. And this week, Earth's Mightiest Critics bust out the fireballs and chain-chomps to settle the "Are the Mario movies good?" argument once and for all (or at least, for now...)!

Join us for a spoilerific game of 1-UPsmanship! We also take your questions, comments, and SuperChats!
