Welcome to Kicking the Seat!

Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).

The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar NoéRachel BrosnahanAmy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.

Ep1175: Predator: Badlands (2025) - Live Roundtable Review

Earth's Mightiest Critics have scoured the galaxy for a worthy Predator sequel.

Will Badlands prove a worthy trophy? Co-writer/director Dan Trachtenberg follows up Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers with a future-set adventure involving the unlikely pairing of a young Yautja warrior-in-training and a damaged Weyland-Yutani synthetic. Together, they must traverse a hostile alien world in search of the ultimate kill--without falling victim to the monster themselves!

The new sequel has garnered enough positive buzz to paper over early concerns about dodgy Predator makeup, a gore-restricting PG-13 rating, and an irksome performance by Elle Fanning. But now that Badlands has been unleashed on the world...is it actually one of the series' best entries?

Join us as we hunt down an answer to the question, "Is the Predator franchise dead--or just getting started?" We'll also take your questions, comments, and SuperChats!
